Sun Sail 08
Version Sun Sail 08 notes:
- Stanchion pole size. Stanchion poles are larger. Can be steel or fiber.
- Fiber is recommended to provide some spring-tensioning but steel will last longer and provide some spring as well. (One must be aware that too much stress on the end of poles attached to the stanchions will stress the stanchion mount to the hull. This might be another reason to use fiber?)
- Boom Stabilization Stabilizer poles have been added to the boom. Ideally it would reduce swing of the boom from 10 inches to 1-2 inches +/-.
- I need to find out how important the stability of the boom is. It is conjecture on my part that it will make the shade flap around a lot in its current unstabilized state. A person with more sailing experience would be better able to answer this question. In my novice opinion, it is important. (see stress on stanchion connection to the hull comment above)
- Boom Attachment Zippered attachment to the sail cover has not changed.
- Critacal Path Supports must be installed before the canvas can be measured. The canvas guy was "flustered" that these were not in place. (it's a long trip from Santana for him) He can only make his canvas fit existing parts. The poles must come first in the sequence.
- Version Sun Sail 07 bugs These changes attempt to solve problems with version 07 presented by the canvas guy. I've taken his suggestions based on what he is most experienced with. See below.
- Similar to previous designs This design is similar to previous designs Sun Sail 02 and Sun Sail 03 except that the boom attachment is on the sail cover at the top of the boom instead of the bottom of the boom. (all previous designs are posted here)
Please add notes, thoughts, critique, in the comment section at the end of this post.
1.Poles are too stiff. We broke them trying to get the correct bend
2. Fix the boom in place so it doesn't swing.
3.Canvas man suggests using the heavy, large diameter poles. They will be strong enough to hold the fabric and flexible enough to provide tension to keep the fabric tight ( the larger of the fiber poles in the current kit seem like they might work well for this)
